AUSTIN, Texas - Midfielder Michael Callahan, who earned All-America honors while leading North Carolina to an NCAA runner-up finish last season, has signed with the Austin Aztex FC, an expansion USL First Division squad, the team announced March 24.
Callahan is already in Austin training with the club, which opens the 2009 season Friday.
Callahan, who tallied 11 points on three goals and five assists in 23 games in 2008, was a second-team NSCAAA/adidas All-America selection and also claimed All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-South regional honors this past season.
He will join fellow former ACC standouts Lyle Adams (Wake Forest), A.J. Godbolt (Maryland) and Zach Pope (Duke) with the Aztex.
"I like what the coaches are trying to accomplish here," Callahan told AustinAztex.com. "The way they go about training. It's a really good environment for me to develop as a player and help this team. I feel like, with their young players, they really want to help them try and develop and move on. Obviously, (head coach) Adrian (Heath) has a lot of connections overseas and I feel they are very committed to develop the players."
