Eight University of North Carolina gymnasts have been named to the 2009 East Atlantic Gymnastics League All-Academic team, announced by the EAGL sports information office Monday.
In order to be named to the EAGL All-Academic team, student-athletes must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher in the two previous semesters. Freshmen are also eligible, if they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester.
Both of Carolina's seniors - Jennifer Valby and Rachel Schneider - were named to the team. Juniors Teri Diamond, Tina Jacob and Kara Wright earned EAGL academic honors for the third consecutive season.
Under head coach Derek Galvin, North Carolina's gymnastics team has produced 71 EAGL All-Academic team members in the last six years.
