Tar Heels in Third After First Round of ACC Women's Golf Championship

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired a 16-over-par 300 in the first round of the ACC Women's Golf Championship finishing third. Wake Forest leads the tournament with a two-above 286 team total followed by Virginia with a team total of 11-above-par 295.
Senior Sydney Crane of Jamestown, N.C., and freshman Allie White from Lancaster, Ohio, led the team in the first round of play. Both players finished two-above-par 73 and are among four tied for fifth place along with Wake Forest's Jean Chua and Duke's Amanda Blumenherst.
Junior Kate Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, shot a six-over 77 as did Ponte Vedra, Fla. native Catherine O'Donnell. Thomas and O'Donnell, a freshman, are both tied for 17th along with Wake Forest's Cheyenne Woods. Senior Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., shot a nine-over-par 80 and is one of three tied at 26.
Leading the ACC, Wake Forest's Natalie Sheary set a new women's course record with a five-under-par 66. Following behind Sheary, Virginia's Calle Nielson shot a two-under 69, Wake Forest's Nannette Hill is currently placed third with a score of 70 and Duke's Jennie Lee placed fourth with a score of 72.
The Tournament will continue Saturday April 18th and Sunday April, 19th at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., which features a par-71, 6,355 yard layout.
One Carlyle Cup point will be awarded to either Carolina or Duke, whichever finishes higher, in the ACC Championship. The Carlyle Cup is a competition between the two schools. Carolina currently leads Duke 11.5-8.5 going into this weekend's competitions (men's and women's golf, men's and women's track, women's lacrosse and women's rowing). After today's round of women's golf, North Carolina leads at third place with a score of 300 while Duke is at fifth place with a score of 309.
