Lawson Wins Bob Cousy Award As Nation's Top Point Guard

Springfield, Mass. -- University of North Carolina junior Ty Lawson is the recipient of the 2009 Bob Cousy Award presented by The Hartford, the asketball Hall of Fame announced today.
The Clinton, Md., native is the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA South Regional and a first-team All-America by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, Basketball Times, Sports Illustrated and CBS.
He is averaging 16.3 points and 6.5 assists per game and is shooting 54.2 percent from the floor, 48.5 percent from three-point range and 81.5 percent from the free throw line. He has committed just 61 turnovers and has an assist/turnover ratio of 3.54 to 1, which is the best single-season mark in ACC history.
In the NCAA Tournament, Lawson has averaged 20.3 points and has 20 assists and two turnovers in three games.
Lawson is the second Tar Heel to win the award, which has been presented annually since 2004. Raymond Felton won the award in 2005, the same year in which he led Carolina to an NCAA title. Lawson and the Tar Heels play Villanova Saturday in the Final Four.

A 30-member committee made up of coaches, Hall of Famers, Sports Information Directors and media from around the country selected Lawson as the Cousy Award winner.
The presentation of the Cousy Award will be made Monday at 11 a.m. at the Marriott Renaissance Center in Detroit.
