Tar Heels Sixth At ACC Championship

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - North Carolina junior Megan McMullin was named to the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference rowing team Monday as the sport's league championship was contested at Melton Hill Lake. The Tar Heels took sixth place overall, with fourth-place finishes in the varsity four and novice eight.
Clemson won the team title with 55 points, marking the first year since the ACC began sponsoring a championship that Virginia has not claimed the crown. The Cavaliers, in second place this year after nine consecutive titles, finished with 54 points. Miami placed third with 34 points, followed by Boston College with 23, Duke with 21, and North Carolina with 19.
The morning's first race was the varsity four, in which Carolina was seeded fourth. The Tar Heels finished fourth overall in a time of 8:14.94. Clemson won the race in 7:43.10. UNC's lineup was Sarah Cook (coxswain), Paige Wolf, Caroline Rekuc, JoAnne Rogers and Anna Noguchi.
Next was the novice eight, another race in which UNC was the No. 4 seed. Carolina again took fourth, finishing in 7:30.53, ahead of Miami in the five-boat field. Virginia won in 7:04.80. Racing for the Tar Heels were Emma Shaw (coxswain), Laura Frings, Emily Urquhart, Chelsea Zurl, Blair Meiggs, Sarah Day, Emily Ronco, Briana Mayes and Caroline La Roche.
UNC, seeded fourth in the second varsity eight, took fifth in that race in 7:42.99. Virginia won in 6:49.30. The Tar Heel lineup was Sarah Nolan (coxswain), Kristi Roblin, Kathleen Reynolds, Andrea McGovern, Lindley Barrow, Chandler Sours, Lindsay Paterniti, Brittany Walsh and Audrey Whitmeyer-Weathers.
The final race of the morning was the varsity eight, which Clemson won in 6:38.40 to lock up the team title. UNC was sixth in 7:11.62. Racing in UNC's top boat were Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Kelsey Grich, Kasey Munson, Megan McMullin, Eugenia Delbono, Ruby Woodside, Whitney Hileman, Andi Drabot and Katie Wood.
The Tar Heels return to action on Saturday, when they'll host Old Dominion at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh.
