Most of us don't really think of Life Magazine as a sports magazine. In fact, Life isn't published anymore, but if you're of a certain age, you probably remember flipping through the very photo-heavy magazine. The magazine's archives have recently been loaded online, and as you might expect, they've got a terrific collection of shots you might not have seen before--and several of them have a Tar Heel slant.
Take, for example, a shot of Queen Elizabeth (front row, center) watching a 1957 Carolina-Maryland football game. In basketball, you've got to love this shot of tipoff of the 1948 NYU-UNC game at Madison Square Garden. There are also a couple good shots of a 1959 game between Cincinnati and Carolina.
Of course, the most iconic UNC-related Life image is a photo of Charlie Justice that appeared on the magazine's cover. They also have an action shot of Justice, plus a slightly odd photo of Jusice throwing a football from the stands.
If you're a history buff, you'll also appreciate this wide view of a 1955 game at State's Reynolds Coliseum, where there were almost as many--or more--seats behind the baskets as there were on the sidelines.
If you poke through the archives and find any other interesting Tar Heel-related photos, let us know and we'll include them in a future post.
