GAINESVILLE, FLA. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team shot 11-over par in the first round of the NCAA Women's East Regional. The par-70 course proved difficult for many players with only nine individuals (of 108 participants) finishing under par for the day.
"We're right in the thick of it," says Tar Heel head coach Sally Austin. "I think we will play better the next two days."
Freshman Catherine O'Donnell leads the Tar Heels by firing a one-under 69. The Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., native shot consistently even all day with a couple of birdies and bogeys canceling out. O'Donnell earned the one-under in her last three holes and is tied for third place with seven other players.
Senior Lauren Hunt bogeyed her last hole of the day to finish three over par. Hunt, of Little River, S.C., is tied for 24th. Freshman Allie White, of Lancaster, Ohio, is right behind Hunt in the Tar Heel line-up with a four-over 74 on the day. White is tied at 37th place. Senior Sydney Crane fired five-over par to tie in 47th place. Crane, of Jamestown, N.C., had been as close as one over par, but she quadruple bogeyed her last hole to end the day. Murwillumbah, Australia, native Kate Thomas shot a 76 to finish the day tied at 58th.
East Carolina is on top the team leader board with a team total 283. In second is four over par Alabama followed by six-over Vanderbilt in third. In the individual standings, Abby Bools and Ana Maria Puche, both of East Carolina, lead the pack at two under par.
The NCAA East Regional is being played at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida in Gainesville, which features a 6,700-yard, par-70 course. The East Regional continues through Saturday. After Regional play ends, the top eight teams and the top two individuals from each regional (East, Central and West) will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 19-22 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
