UNC Women's Golf Team Ninth At NCAA East Regional

GAINESVILLE, FLA. -
The University of North Carolina women's golf team carded a 303 in the second round of the NCAA East Regional and is in ninth place going into Saturday's final round. The Tar Heels have a 594 total after firing a 291 in the first round.
"We're disappointed with today, but we've got tomorrow and I think we'll have a good round and be in the top eight (teams)," says Tar Heel head coach Sally Austin. "We put ourselves in a position we'd rather not be in, but there's nothing like coming from behind."
Sophomore Catherine O'Donnell and senior Sydney Crane led the Tar Heels in Friday's second round as both fired a four-over-par 74. O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., is tied for eighth place at three-over 143 while Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., has a 149 total and is tied for 38th place. Allie White, a freshman from Lancaster, Ohio, is also tied for 38th with Crane after carding a five-over 75 in the second round. Senior Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., shot 80 and is tied for 69th place with a 153 total while junior Kate Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, has a 158 total after posting an 82 and is in 89th place.
Alabama leads the 21-team field with a 15-over-par 575 total after firing a 291 in the second round. Denver is eight strokes back in second place with a 583 total while Tennessee and Vanderbilt are tied for third place with 585 totals. Virginia is in sixth place at 587, Tulane is seventh at 588, Duke is seventh at 591 and Georgia is in eighth place with a 592 total, just two strokes ahead of the Tar Heels.
Camilla Lennarth of Alabama grabbed the individual lead after firing an even par 70 for a one-under-par 139 total. Three players are two strokes back with 141 totals - Vanderbilt's Marina Alex, Tennessee's Nathalie Mansson and Auburn's Candace Schepperle. Another trio of players is tied for fifth place at two-over 142 - Central Florida's Stephanie Connelly, Tulane's Linn Gustafsson and Alabama's Brooke Pancake. Carolina's O'Donnell is one of six players tied for eighth place with 143 totals.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Saturday at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida which features a par 70, 6,023-yard layout. The top eight teams and the top two individuals not on those eight teams advance on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 19-22 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
