Former North Carolina football letterman Jim Byrd, father of PGA Tour pro Jonathan Byrd, passed away Tuesday, July 7.
The 65-year-old had battled brain cancer since being diagnosed with a tumor in the fall of 2007 after collapsing during a family trip to a Clemson football game against Virginia Tech.
Surgery originally removed the growth, but last year the tumor returned and Byrd had been undergoing further treatment. He was a 1967 graduate from the University of North Carolina where he played football.
Memorial services for Jim Byrd will be held 2 p.m. on Friday at First Presbyterian Church at 1324 Marion St. in Columbia. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Dunbar Funeral Home on Devine St. and after the memorial service in Jackson Hall at First Presbyterian.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church, S.C. Junior Golf, Fairway Outreach, or another charity of choice.
