Smith Listed Among Two Best College Basketball Coaches In History

North Carolina legend Dean Smith is No. 8 on Sporting News' list of sports' 50 greatest coaches of all-time, as selected by a panel of 118 Hall of Famers, championship coaches and other experts. The 14-page feature is part of the new Sporting News Magazine, which hits newsstands this week.
Among college basketball coaches, Smith was second on the list to only John Wooden, a runaway choice for No. 1 overall. Wooden picked up 57 first-place votes from SN's panel, which includes seven World Series-winning managers, four Super Bowl champion coaches and the winningest coaches in the NBA, NHL and college basketball.
Current Tar Heels coach Roy Williams was among the coaching greats who filled out ballots for SN, joining Bobby Bowden, Larry Brown, Whitey Herzog, Tommy Lasorda, Marv Levy, Tom Osborne, Don Shula, Steve Spurrier, Bob Stoops, Pat Summitt, Barry Switzer and Lenny Wilkens, among others. SMU coach Matt Doherty, a starter on Smith's 1982 national championship team, wrote an appreciation of his former coach in the new issue of Sporting News Magazine.
"I screwed up," Doherty wrote. "In the 1982 NCAA championship game, I missed a foul shot that allowed Georgetown to go down and score -- Sleepy Floyd hit a jump shot and we were down one in the final minute. Coach Smith called a timeout with 32 seconds left.
"Here was a guy who was such a gifted coach, who'd been criticized because he'd never won a championship. We're down one point, and he talked in such a calm manner that it gave us confidence to go out and execute. In those situations, he had a very calming influence on us. ... Coach always made you feel like, Isn't this fun? We're right where we want to be. He always had a twinkle in his eye that made you feel confident. I don't think there was ever a situation where we didn't feel like we were prepared -- whether a team threw out a zone or a surprise trap, we felt like we were prepared.
"He pulled me aside at one point during the timeout and said, `If you're open, knock it down.' It's been written about a lot that he said that to Michael Jordan (who hit the game-winner with 17 seconds left). So he probably made everyone in his own way feel if they were open, they could knock it down. Fortunately, the best player on the floor was the one who was open."
Wooden, who won a record 10 Division I men's basketball championships in 12 years, edged Green Bay Packers great Vince Lombardi for the top spot. Rounding out the top 20 of SN's list: 3.
