UNC Shuts Out Villanova, 7-0

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The North Carolina field hockey team earned its third shutout of the season Friday, beating Villanova 7-0 in the Vonnie Gros Classic, hosted by West Chester University. UNC, which moved up two spots to No. 2 in this week's national poll, improved to 5-0 on the season, while the Wildcats fell to 2-2.
The Tar Heels got two goals each from senior Melanie Brill, junior Katelyn Falgowski and freshman Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany, as well as one from senior Riley Foster.
"I was very pleased with the win today," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Everyone got a chance to play, which was great. Overally, we played well and with a lot of aggression."
Gaudioso Radvany, a forward from Lawrenceville, N.J., put UNC on the board in the eighth minute of play on an assist from junior Elizabeth Drazdowski. Less than 10 minutes later, Foster, a back from Fort Worth, Texas, made the score 2-0 with the first goal of her career, on a rebound of a penalty corner.
A minute later, Brill scored on a penalty corner, assisted by Foster and Falgowski, to put UNC up 3-0. The fourth goal of the half came in the 29th minute, when Falgowski connected on a penalty stroke, her first attempt of the season.
Carolina drew a penalty corner at the start of the second half, and Brill picked up her second goal of the game 45 seconds into the period, with assists again going to Foster and Falgowski. A back from Oley, Pa., Brill has a team-high eight goals on the season. one shy of her career total heading into the year.
In the 42nd minute, Gaudioso Radvany scored her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Brill. The final goal came from Falgowski in the 42nd minute of play.
For the game, UNC outshot Villanova 28-5, with all of the Wildcats' shots coming in the second half. Junior Jackie Kintzer started in goal for Carolina and senior Brianna O'Donnell played the second half, making one save in Villanova's only shot on goal.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a Saturday afternoon matchup with host West Chester, which played Appalachian State Friday evening in the event's other first-round game. The Vonnie Gros Classic honors the longtime Golden Rams coach, who coached UNC's Karen Shelton during her playing career at WCU.
