Carolina Golfers Finish Third At Duramed Cougar Classic

The North Carolina women's golf team fired a three-over-par 291 for a five-over 869 total to finish in third place at the Duramed Cougar Classic. The Tar Heels were led by sophomore Catherine O'Donnell who carded a two-under 214 total to finish tied for seventh in the individual race.
O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., fired a one-over 73 in the final round after earlier rounds of 69-72. Two other Tar Heels posted top-25 finishes - Kate Thomas tied for 16th place and Margaret Pentrack tied for 25th. Thomas, a senior from Murwillumbah, Australia, finished at two-over 218 after posting a 75 on Monday. Margaret Pentrack, a junior from Pittsburgh, Pa., also shot 75 in the final round to finish with a 220 total. Junior Sarah Thead, from Poway, Calif., carded a 73 in the final round to finish at 223 in a tie for 34th while freshman Courtney Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., fired the best round of the day for the Tar Heels, a three-under 69. Gunter finished with a 225 total to tie for 45th place.
Georgia captured the team title over the 18-team field. The Bulldogs fired a one-under 287 to finish with a 14-under 850 total, seven strokes ahead of Florida State which finished at seven-under 857 after firing a six-under 282 in the final round. The Tar Heels finished third at five-over 869, three strokes ahead of Tennessee which finished fourth at 872. Furman finished another stroke back at 873 in fifth place while Wisconsin finished sixth at 878, Vanderbilt finished seventh at 881 and Texas finished eighth with an 886 total.
Marta Silva Zamora of Georgia captured the individual championship with an eight-under 208 total after firing a two-under 70 in the final round. Lacey Agnew of Florida State finshed just one stroke back in second place with a seven-under 209 total. Emilie Burger of Georgia and Stefanie Kenoyer of Furman tied for third place with 212 totals while Maryland's Jessica Hollandsworth and Georgia's Milena Savich tied for fifth with 213 totals. A trio of players tied for seventh place at two-under 214 - Carolina's O'Donnell, Vanderbilt's Marina Alex and Wisconsin's Jessie Gerry.
The 54-hole event was played at Yeamans Hall which features a par 72, 6,211-yard layout. The Tar Heels' next action will be Oct. 9-11 when they host the Tar Heel Invitational at UNC Finley Golf Course.
