Zaytoun III Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Henry Zaytoun III won is first college golf tournament and led UNC to the team title as well and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for September 7-13, 2009. A junior from Raleigh, Zaytoun was co-champion of the Maryland Intercollegiate played at River Marsh Golf Club in Cambridge, Md. He carded a seven-under-par 206 total after firing rounds of five-under 66, one-over 72 and three-under 68. Zaytoun and Ben Kohles of Virginia finished four strokes ahead of VCU's Rafael Campos. Zaytoun led Carolina to the team title as well. The Tar Heels came from behind to win their first tournament of the year. Carolina, which was tied for fourth place going into the final round, won by a single stroke over VCU. The Tar Heels finished with a three-under-par 849 total while the Rams posted an 850 total.

Melanie Brill, a senior back from Oley, Pa., scored seven goals and a total of 16 points last week as UNC won a trio of games by wide margins. She scored three goals and added an assist in a Tuesday win at Davidson, contributed two more with another assist in a neutral-site win over Villanova Friday and finished with two more goals against host West Chester on Saturday. Additionally, she played a major role from her position at back as UNC picked up three shutouts and limited opponents to a total of seven shots over the three-game span. Brill leads the Tar Heels (6-0) in goals this season with 10, one more than her career total heading into the year.

Ashlyn Harris led the Tar Heels to their fifth straight shutout victory and her third solo shutout in that span as No. 1 Carolina whipped No. 13 Texas A&M 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Fetzer Field. Harris, who has a 0.18 goals against average this season, twice stuffed shots from the four-yard line by unmarked players to keep UNC's game with the Aggies scoreless until the Tar Heels scored twice in the last nine minutes to claim the victory. Harris stopped Amber Gnatzig's point-blank shot in the sixth minute to force a corner kick and also stuffed what appeared to be a sure goal by Chelsea Jones in the 57th minute, forcing another corner kick. Harris has now helped the Tar Heel defense compile a shutout streak of 453 minutes and 21 seconds since the UCLA game on August 22.

Catherine O'Donnell tied for third place in the 36-hole medal play qualifier by firing a pair of even par 72s for an even par 144 total. She finished just two strokes behind champion Cydney Clanton of Auburn who posted a two-under 142. Carolina tied for 11th in the medal qualifying with a 607 total with rounds of 305-302.

In his first ACC match, junior midfielder Michael Farfan lifted No. 2 North Carolina past No. 18 NC State with a 65th-minute go-ahead goal in Saturday?s 2-1 victory. With the match tied at one, Farfan took possession outside the box, beat a defender at the edge of the area then blasted a shot that ricocheted off the right post for the game-winner. A junior transfer from Cal State Fullerton, Farfan has already tallied three goals on the season and leads the Tar Heels in both goals and points with seven. He has started all four games on the season for the unbeaten Tar Heels.
