Yates Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

T.J. Yates was 19 of 24 for 227 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-17 win over East Carolina and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for September 14-20, 2009. The junior from Marietta, Ga., connected with freshman Erik Highsmith on a 16-yard touchdown pass to tie the score at seven, then found Jheranie Boyd on a 59-yard touchdown play in the second quarter to give UNC a 14-7 lead. Yates completed a career-high 79.2 percent of his passes and at one point completed nine in a row.

Billy Schuler led No. 2 North Carolina to its fourth straight win over No. 11 Duke Friday with a first-half unassisted goal to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead. He buried a 22nd-minute strike from 20 yards off the left post and into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Schuler took four shots in the Tar Heels' win and put three on goal, as Carolina improved to 2-0-0 in league action. He has started all five games this season and has three points on a goal and an assist.

Catherine O'Donnell tied for seventh place at the Duramed Cougar Classic played at Yeamans Hall in Hanahan, S.C. O'Donnell carded a two-under-par 214 total after firing a three-under 69 in the first round followed by an even par 72 in the second round and a one-over 73 in the final round.
O'Donnell led the Tar Heels to a third-place finish in their second tournament of the year. Carolina fired a five-over 869 total with rounds of 288-290-291.

Led by goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris and the starting defensive line of Rachel Givan, Whitney Engen and Kristi Eveland, the Tar Heel women's soccer squad posted their sixth and seventh successive shutouts of the season this past weekend in the Duke Nike Classic as UNC went 1-0-1, beating LSU 1-0 and tying Auburn 0-0. The shutout against Auburn Sunday was UNC's 15th clean sheet in the past 18 matches dating back to October of last season. Carolina has allowed only two goals in the 2009 season, both in the season opener against UCLA on August 22. UNC's consecutive scoreless minutes streak has now reached 663 minutes and 21 seconds.

Watchempino won the UNC Challenge on Friday for the second year in a row. His final time of 24:57.10 was 30 seconds faster than all other competitors in the 8000-meter race.

Women's Cross Country
Lucena not only won the UNC Challenge women's 5000-meter race, but she also shaved 45 seconds off of her personal best time in the event. Her time of 17:30.90 was simply outstanding. This was only her second race as a Tar Heel - her first was a fourth place finish at the Covered ridge Open during Labor Day weekend in Boone, N.C.

Danielle Forword, a senior forward from East London, South Africa, scored five goals last week as the second-ranked Tar Heels earned three shutout wins to improve to 9-0 on the year. Against Radford on Wednesday, she scored twice as UNC won 8-0. She had the gamewinner on Friday against No. 15 Old Dominion, scoring the first goal of the game on a penalty corner in the seventh minute of a 4-0 win. On Sunday against Longwood, she scored the final goal in a 6-0 win.
Forword now has seven goals on the season after returning from a knee injury that kept her out of the final eight games of 2008.
