CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina began their 2009 fall campaign in dominant fashion defeating Elon 15-5 in a nine inning scrimmage Friday night. Christine Orr and Ally Blake paced the Tar Heel offense, while three pitchers combined on a three hit shutout. Orr was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Blake went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, including a double and triple.
Danielle Spaulding pitched three innings striking out six of the nine batters faced. Orr tossed three hitless innings only rendering one walk and Amber Johnson struck out six while giving up three hits and five runs to finish of the Phoenix.
Two freshman notched solid debuts in their first fall action. Paige Williams uncorked her first home run at Anderson Stadium and Chelsey Butler followed with a triple over the centerfielders' head. Seven Tar Heels posted a hit in the 15-5 rout of Elon as the Heels scored in every inning but two, including five runs in the final frame.
North Carolina will host its Alumni Weekend this Friday to Sunday that will feature four fall games. Carolina will play a doubleheader against Campbell Friday at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The Tar Heels will face UNC-Wilmington Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
