Carolina Golfers Tied For 11th At NGCA Collegiate Championship

The North Carolina women's golf team opened its 2009-10 season Sunday and tied for 11th place in the medal play qualifier of the NGCA Collegiate Match Play Championship. The Tar Heels, under the tutelage of first-year head coach Jan Mann, were led by sophomore Catherine O'Donnell who fired rounds of 305-302 for a 607 total. The final two days of the event will feature match play at the LPGA International Legends Course with features a par 72, 6,280-yard layout.
O'Donnell fired an even par 144 total after scoring two rounds of even par 72. The Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., native tied for third place in the 36-hole medal play qualifier. Tar Heel freshman Courtney Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., tied for 29th place after firing rounds of 75-76 for a 151 total. Junior Margaret Pentrack, from Pittsburgh, Pa., tied for 46th with a 154 total (78-76) while Kate Thomas, a senior from Murwillumbah, Australia, tied for 66th at 159 (80-79) and Jordan Allyne, a junior from Bellevue, Wash., tied for 76th with a 165 total (87-78).
Florida topped the field of 16 teams with a nine-over-par 585 total after firing rounds of 293-292. The Gators will be seeded #1 headed into the match-play portion of the event. South Carolina will be seeded #2 as the Gamecocks finished one stroke behind Florida at 10-over 586. Auburn and LSU tied for third at 590 while Georgia placed fifth in the medal qualifier at 592.
Cydney Clanton of Auburn captured the individual title, firing a two-under 142 total with rounds of 73-69. Rachel Raastad finished one stroke back in second place at 143 with scores of 71-72. Five players, including Carolina's O'Donnell, tied for third place at even-par 144 - South Carolina's Katie Burnett and Amanda Strang, LSU's Jaqueline Hedwall and Georgia's Milena Savich.
The results of Sunday's 36-hole stroke play competition will be used to seed teams 1-16 for the match play competition with the top eight teams competing in the Championship Bracket and the bottom eight in the Consolation Bracket. Match play competition begins Monday with two 18-hole matches followed by the Championship Final on Tuesday. The event is the only match play championship on the collegiate schedule.
