Ed Davis Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Ed Davis had 19 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks against the College of Charleston and 20 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in the ACC opening win over Virginia Tech to earn Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for January 4-10, 2010. The sophomore from Richmond, Va., totaled 39 points (19.5), 27 rebounds (13.5) and nine blocks (4.5) in the two games.

Steve Cebertowicz captured both freestyle sprint events and swam on a pair of winning relays to lead the Tar Heels to a 181-110 victory over Clemson. The win over the Tigers kept the Tar Heels unbeaten this year at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACC with meets remaining against Virginia, Duke and NC State. Cebertowicz anchored the Tar Heels to a season-best time of 1:31.01 in the 200-yard medley relay. He led off UNC's victorious 400 free relay and was just .09 off his season best in the 50 free.

Freshman Carly Smith, out with an injury since UNC's meet with Georgia Tech on October 31, returned to competition in grand fashion as she posted two individual first place finishes and swam on the winning 200-yard medley relay in Carolina's 187-106 victory over Clemson. The win improved the Tar Heels to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. After leading off the victorious 200-yard medley relay, Smith won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:01.18, a lifetime best in the event, breaking her previous best of 2:01.74. Smith won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.28, an NCAA "B" qualifying time which was just a second of her lifetime best in the event.

Ivy won the 60-meter hurdles at the Eddie and Jo Smith Tar Heel Invitational in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.34 seconds. She also was second in the 200 meters in 25.65.
