Carolina Finishes On High Note At VT Invite

North Carolina's track and field teams finished up at the two-day Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday with several high finishes as well as two first-place nods, one earned by the men's 4x400 relay and the other by Jacinda Evans in the long jump. The men's squad only entered one relay for the meet and took home first with a time of 3:14.24, almost a full second faster than the remainder of the field.
For individuals on the men's team, junior Ian Williamson tagged a new personal record in the 400 with his section-winning time of 49.33. Williamson placed fourth overall in the event. Kenneth Andoll raced the 200 in 24-flat, but did not place.
In field events, Donte Nall was just two and a half inches shy of a win in the high jump, but claimed third place at a height of 6-10 3/4. Travis Leonard also competed in the high jump, leaping 6-4 3/4. Edward Baldwin III earned second place in the long jump on a technicality, leaping 25-0.
In the shot put, Kwabena Keene took on shot put on Saturday, leading the Heels with his sixth-place finish at 53-8 1/4. Kyle Goodman was next for Carolina's throwers with a new personal best of 49-4 1/4, breaking his personal best from last week's bout in the event. Newcomer Chris DiLorenzo also competed but fouled while multi Mateo Sossah shot put a length of 43-4 3/4.
On the women's side, Vanneisha Ivy placed sixth in the 200 with teammate Zoey Russell right behind, each with a rounded time of 25.08. That time marked a new personal best for Russell in the 200. Malai Walker also competed in the 200, racing 25.66 in the event. The women's 4x400 had to settle for fourth place on Saturday with their race of 3:43.83.
Jacinda Evans took control of the long jump and claimed a new personal record of 20-8 1/2. Tyler Ford entering scoring position for the Heels with her fourth-place leap of 20-0 1/2, just a half of an inch short of her personal best. Chrishawn Williams (18-6) and multis Danielle Brock (17-7 1/2) and Gabby Gioia (18-10) also competed in the event.
Patience Coleman led Carolina in the high jump with her fourth-place finish of 5-8 1/2. Coleman was tailed by Ariel Roberts whose 5-7 jump earned her sixth overall. Briana Hudson and Alexandra Coppadge also competed, each reaching 5-3.
Carolina's next action is the Kent Taylor UNC Classic on Saturday, January 23rd in Chapel Hill at the Eddie Smith Field House. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
