NEWTON, Mass. - North Carolina scored the gamewinner on a penalty corner in the seventh minute of play and added two second-half goals off the bench to beat Connecticut 3-1 Sunday in a top-five field hockey matchup, hosted by Boston College at Newton Campus Field. The top-ranked Tar Heels improved to 14-0 on the season with their seventh win of the season over a team ranked in the top 20. No. 5 UConn fell to 10-3 with the loss.
UNC had just nine shots on the day, but put five of them on target and scored on three. Sophomore Caitlin Van Sickle gave UNC the only goal it would need 6:46 into the game, assisted by freshman Marta Malmberg on one of the Tar Heels' six penalty corners. After leading 1-0 at halftime, Carolina added two more goals in the second half. In the 57th minute, sophomore Katie Plyler scored her third goal of the season on a rebound following a save. The Tar Heels' third goal on the day was by senior Jen Slocum, on an assist from sophomore Kelsey Kolojejchick.
Senior goalkeeper Jackie Kintzer made seven saves and allowed just one UConn goal, a score by Allison Angulo on a penalty corner in the 65th minute, less than a minute after UNC had gone up 3-0.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a pair of home games. Carolina hosts fourth-ranked Virginia Saturday for an Atlantic Coast Conference battle. James Madison, unranked but among teams also receiving votes, visits Henry Stadium on Sunday. Both games are set for 1 p.m.
