White Named Tar Heel Performer Of The Week

Johnny White, a senior tailback from Asheville, N.C., is the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for October 4-10, 2010. White had 179 of Carolina's 255 total yards of offense in a 21-16 victory over Clemson. White rushed for 89 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also caught six passes for 90 yards, including a long of 51 yards. White scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. He later scored on a 26-yard run with 6:53 remaining in the fourth quarter to take a 21-10 lead. One of his biggest plays of the game was a 12-yard reception on 3rd-and-9 on Carolina's final drive of the game. Carolina got the ball with 5:25 remaining and White was involved in all 10 plays (9 rushes, 1 reception) as the Tar Heels ate up over five minutes on the game clock.

Sophomore goalkeeper Scott Goodwin helped lead the fourth-ranked Tar Heels to a 2-0 record on the week and recorded his fourth shutout of the year in the process. Goodwin turned away four shots, including a free kick with only sevenseconds remaining to preserve UNC's 1-0 win over Wake Forest and lower his ACC-leading goals against average in conference play to 0.20. The Raleigh, N.C., native has allowed just one goal in five conference games and has posted four clean sheets in helping Carolina to a 5-point advantage in the ACC standings. Goodwin is allowing 0.90 goals per game on the season and has turned away 24 shots for the 8-2 Tar Heels.

Sophomore forward Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany scored twice Friday as UNC won 3-0 at No. 12 Boston College to improve to 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play and 13-0overall. The Tar Heels picked up another win on Sunday, 3-1 over fifth-ranked UConn, to move to 14-0 on the year. Gaudioso Radvany has eight goals this season, third on the team and one shy of her total for all of last season.

Sophomore Jose Hernandez made the deepest run of all UNC players in last week's ITA All-American Championships. In the first round of the main men'ssingles draw, Hernandez faced Peter Lucassen, a senior qualifier from the University of Southern California. Hernandez dispatched Lucassen in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) to advance to a second-round match with Tulsa sophomore Marcelo Arevalo. Hernandez beat Arevalo 6-4, 7-6(1), but lost to
12th-seeded Sanam Singh of Virginia in the next round (3-6, 6-4, 6-3).

oyajian enjoyed a fantastic individual run through the qualifying stage of the D'Novo/ITA All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The junior won three consecutive matches to qualify for the main draw, all after dropping the first set. He started his run with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 dispatching of Yannick Weihs of Denver University. The next morning he showed great determination in a tight, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Cal Berkeley's Christoffer Konigsfeldt. Boyajian completed his qualification with a powerful performance against Tsvetan Mihov of Oklahoma, winning 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Senior Christine Vaughen led North Carolina to a victory over Wake Forest Wednesday and a 6-1 start in the ACC. Vaughen uncorked 17 kills with a .351 hitting percentage and added a pair of blocks in a 3-1 win at Wake Forest. The senior added six kills and a block in a loss at Duke, which snapped Carolina's season-best 11-match win streak. The Simi Valley, Calif., native leads UNC with a .360 hitting percentage on the year.

Dunn scored her third goal of the season and the first game-winning goal of her career in the first overtime (99th minute of play) to power third-ranked North Carolina to a 1-0 victory at No. 6 Virginia in ACC play last Friday. Dunn has three goals on the season, all in ACC action.

Peacock led the Tar Heels to a victory in their season opener against East Carolina, winning two individual events, swimming on a winning relay and also taking a second-place place finish in her debut meet as a Tar Heel. Peacock won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.58 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.13 while also swimming the anchor leg on the victorious 400-yard medley relay.

The Tar Heel veteran swam on both winning relays for UNC and also captured a pair of individual events as the Tar Heels opened the season with a win over East Carolina. Wyher was a member of the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays while also taking the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle (44.62) and the 100-yard butterfly (48.67). Wyher's time in the 100-yard freestyle was a personal record and moved him into a tie for 10th place all-timeamong UNC performers in the event.

Tar Heel junior Catherine O¹Donnell tied for 10th place at last weekend's Tar Heel Invitational. She scored par or better in all three rounds for her 5-under-par 211 total. O¹Donnell posted a 1-under 71 in Friday's first round, fired a 4-under 68 in the second round and an even par 72 in the final round. The Tar Heels finished in fifth place at 2-over 866 with rounds of 294-284-288.
