OCCOQUAN, Va. - The North Carolina rowing team faced off against outside competition for the first time this fall on Sunday, with a productive day of racing at the Occoquan Chase. Racing against a large field on the Occoquan Reservoir, Tar Heel boats finished as high as second overall in the eights and fourth overall in the fours.
"We didn't come away with a No. 1 spot and that was a little disappointing, but we were pleased with what we did overall as a team," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "Our first eight came in second by less than two seconds, which is tough to swallow. But our second eight beat all the other second eights and some of the first eights."
Likewise, the Tar Heels' depth came through in the fours, with the third and fourth boats faring very well against the same level boats from other team.
"We feel like our depth is looking good," Haney said. "Overall, as a team, we feel really good. We want to attack with a little bit more power next time."
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Head of the Chattahoochee regatta on Nov. 6-7 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
