The North Carolina field hockey team jumped to an early lead and never looked back en route to a 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference win over ninth-ranked Wake Forest Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The second-ranked Tar Heels improved to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play with the victory, while the Demon Deacons fell to 6-5 overall, 1-2 in the ACC.
Five different players scored for the Tar Heels, with junior Elizabeth Stephens putting Carolina ahead for good just over two minutes into the game. She dribbled into the circle from the right side and put a shot past Wake Forest goalkeeper Kaitlyn Ruhf from just in front of the cage, and the Tar Heels never trailed.
Carolina added to the lead in the 10th minute of play, when sophomore Katie Ardrey grabbed a rebound and scored her second goal of the season after Ruhf saved the initial shot on a corner.
Twenty minutes later, sophomore Caitlin Van Sickle got her eighth goal of the season, pouncing on the rebound after a shot by senior Elizabeth Drazdowski was saved to put UNC up 3-0 at the break.
The Tar Heels again scored early in the second period. Stephens carried the ball into the circle then passed back to a trailing Taryn Gjurich, who shot to put UNC up 4-0 in the 37th minute. Just 23 seconds later, Wake Forest got its only goal of the day, when Emily Cummings scored to get her team on the board.
Carolina's final goal came in the 59th minute, when sophomore Katie Plyler tipped in a ball from Van Sickle.
"I was very pleased with today's outcome," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I felt like we got off to a quick start, which was one of our points of emphasis at our pregame meeting. We've also been working on our press and the first goal was a result of great press work and a strong counter attack. We were delighted to get on the board so early and take a three-goal lead into halftime."
The win was UNC's second of the season over the Demon Deacons. Carolina won 5-0 in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Sept. 3 in a game that did not count toward the conference standings. Saturday's matchup was the designated ACC meeting for the year.
The Tar Heels are back in action on Monday, when they host California for a 1 p.m. game at Henry Stadium. The Cal sidelines will have a familiar look, as former Carolina standout Carrie Lingo returns to Chapel Hill as a Golden Bear assistant coach.
