
No. 2 Tar Heels Take Down Clemson 5-1

CLEMSON, S.C. - Freshman forward Kealia Ohai scored twice and junior striker Courtney Jones added a goal and an assist as second-ranked North Carolina defeated Clemson 5-1 Thursday night before a crowd of 1,006 at Historic Riggs Field. With the victory, the Tar Heels moved into sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings as Carolina prepares to host fourth-ranked Maryland Sunday at Fetzer Field.
UNC is now 14-1-1 and 6-1 in the ACC after winning its sixth match in a row since falling at home to Boston College 3-2 on September 23. Clemson fell to 5-11 overall and 0-8 in the ACC.
Carolina jumped on top early, in just the third minute of the match, as Kealia Ohai scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist by freshman midfielder Crystal Dunn. Dunn took a shot at the 2:02 mark that was saved by Clemson starting goalkeeper Lauren Arnold. But Ohai pounced on the rebound and sent it into the back up the net to put the Tar Heels ahead 1-0 at the 2:04 mark.
It took a little over 11 minutes later for Carolina to make it 2-0. The goal came off the foot of sophomore midfielder Amber Brooks who struck a ball from 25 yards that went over Arnold's head for the score. The goal was the sixth of the year for Brooks. Ohai was credited with an assist on the play.
The Tar Heels broke the game open with a pair of goals early in the second half. After UNC starting goalkeeper Hannah Daly made a save on a Clemson shot by Jackie Dutton at 46:17 to keep with score 2-0, UNC scored less than four minutes into the second half. This time it was Courtney Jones who tallied as her shot from the far corner of the box found the net at 48:21 for her sixth goal of the year.
Just over seven minutes later the Heels made it 4-0 on Ohai's second goal of the match and 11th of the campaign. Ohai finished from 15 yards into the left side of the net off an assist by Courtney Jones at 55:33.
UNC made it 5-0 at 70:29 on a goal by freshman midfielder Olivia MBala off an assist by junior Emmalie Pfankuch. The goal came off a corner kick. It was MBala's first goal of her career and Pfankuch's assist was her first of the season.
Carolina almost made it 6-0 at 76:52 but sophomore Kylie Watt hit the cross bar with her shot.
Clemson got on the board at 88:14 on a goal by Heather Marik, her second of the year. Sara Fortier had the assist on the goal which came off Fortier's corner kick.
Carolina will return to the pitch on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field when it plays host to fourth-ranked Maryland. The Terps are 12-2-1 on the season and 4-2-1 on the campaign after being upset 2-1 Thursday night at Wake Forest.
