NORFOLK, Va. - Junior Taryn Gjurich scored the gamewinning goal in the 44th minute of play as the second-ranked North Carolina field hockey team beat host Old Dominion 2-1 Saturday at Powhatan Sports Complex. UNC improved to 17-1 on the season, while No. 19 ODU fell to 9-10 overall.
Carolina has one regular-season game remaining, on Sunday against Radford at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Gametime is 1 p.m. and the Tar Heels will celebrate Senior Day prior to the game.
On Saturday in Norfolk, the Lady Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute after sophomore Julie Hodge scored on a penalty stroke, the first against the Tar Heels this season.
Carolina tied the score in the 33rd minute on a penalty corner, the team's third of the game. Freshman Marta Malmberg notched her third goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Katie Ardrey and junior Teryn Brill.
The 1-1 tie held up more than eight minutes in the second half before Gjurich's score. Her sixth goal of the season came on a deflection off of a cross from junior Elizabeth Stephens.
Down by one, ODU pulled goalkeeper Devon Seifert with just over 10 minutes remaining and played the rest of the way with an additional field player in an unsuccessful effort to pick up the tying goal. UNC senior Jackie Kintzer made her fifth save of the game at the 68:17 mark, and the Lady Monarchs got off one more shot that went wide.
Old Dominion finished the game with 11 shots, eight of them in the first half, to 10 by UNC. ODU had just two penalty corners, both in the first half. UNC finished with six, three in each half.
The meeting was the second of the fall between the two teams. North Carolina beat ODU 3-1 on Sept. 17 in Chapel Hill.
Saturday's win was the 499th of coach Karen Shelton's 30-year career as the head coach at UNC.
