CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Freshmen Lori Spingola and Sara Buchholz combined to toss a perfect game leading North Carolina over UNC Greensboro 3-0 in game one of a doubleheader Friday night at Anderson Stadium. Spignola fanned seven Spartan batters in five innings of work as Buchholz hurled the last two frames to seal the 3-0 win.
Brittany McKinney belted a double and a two-run home run to pace the Carolina offense. Senior Brittany Robinson and sophomore Haleigh Dickey each notched two hits apiece to add to the Tar Heel attack.
The second game featured a pitching duel between UNC Greensboro's Josie Felix and the Carolina staff. UNC starter Constance Orr pitched three strong innings registering three strikeouts and allowing just one hit. Freshman hurler Ashley Bone saw action in relief and Spingola retired the Spartans when called upon with two runners in scoring position with two outs.
After the Spartans gained a 1-0 lead on a solo home run off the bat of Eileen Horsmon, the Carolina bats answered right back. Freshman outfielder Amy Nece hustled out an infield bunt single to lead off the inning. Robinson laced a single up the middle and McKinney delivered again with a big RBI double down the left field line.
Orr then helped her own cause mashing a two-run double an giving UNC a 3-1 lead the squad would not surrender. The Tar Heels took the second game of the double-header 3-1 to improve to 2-0 on the fall season.
The Heels will face off against East Carolina Wednesday, Oct. 6th at 7:30pm under the lights of Anderson Softball Stadium.
