University of North Carolina head football coach Butch Davis and members of the Tar Heel football team unveiled the 2010 Holiday Kids Cards at the North Carolina Children's Promise Radiothon/Telethon Thursday. The unveiling took place on stage in the lobby of the UNC Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Davis and his wife, Tammy, serve as Honorary Chairs of the Kids Cards program. This is the third consecutive year Davis and members of the football program have unveiled the holiday cards.
"It's a cool deal," said Davis. "You get to hang out with some of the kids and unveil that Christmas card. It was really a neat experience.
"I think it's unbelievably important for our players to be involved in the community. As a freshman a lot of times they've never done it. Generally, the older they get, like Alan Pelc and Mike Ingersoll (fifth-year seniorss), nobody even asks them, they just go. Like anyone who gets involved with community related projects, it winds up impacting you almost more than the people you go to see."
The N.C. Children's Promise Radiothon/Telethon is UNC Health Care's largest fundraiser each year. It features broadcasts from Curtis Media Group radio stations and Time Warner Cable's News 14 Carolina, all live from the Children's Hospital lobby, beginning at 6 a.m. The program's goal is to raise money to support the Children's Hospital's cutting-edge medical services and programs.
The Kids Cards Project, a program of the N.C. Children's Promise, raises funds for the benefit of pediatric patients and their families at North Carolina Children's Hospital. Through the sale of cards and other items featuring the artwork of patients of the hospital, Kids Cards aims to heighten public awareness about the special care, attention and needs of seriously ill children. Proceeds from the sale of all Kids Cards merchandise are used to fund novel and unique programs whose goals are to enrich the lives of our pediatric patients. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Kids Cards program.
