Final Score: NC State 29, North Carolina 25
Carolina falls to 63-31-6 all-time against NC State in the 100th meeting between the two schools.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Tar Heels, the longest losing stretch since 1988-92 when the Wolfpack won five consecutive.
Quarterback T.J. Yates finished 33 of 44 for 411 yards and two touchdowns, his sixth 300+ yard game of the season and his third 400+ yard game. His 33 completions were a school single-game record. The previous record was 31 by Kevin Anthony against LSU in 1985 and Darian Durant against Syracuse in 2003.
Yates' 411 yards were the most by a Tar Heel in Kenan Stadium, eclipsing the previous best of 388 by Ronald Curry against Georgia Tech in 2000.
Yates set a new single-season record for passing yards with a 16-yard pass to Ryan Taylor in the second quarter and now has 2,920 for the year. The previous record was 2,655 yards by Yates in 2007.
Yates also passed Darian Durant (8,755) for the career yards passing mark in the third quarter and now has 8,879 yards in his four years. Yates currently holds all the Carolina records for pass completions and passing yards (single-game, single-season and career).
Running back Anthony Elzy finished with 12 carries for 32 yards and nine catches for 178 yards and a touchdown. His 178 receiving yards were the most in school history by a running back and the 10th-most by any player at Carolina. Four of the 10 best receiving performances in school history have happened in 2010.
Elzy accounted for 88 yards on Carolina's first quarter touchdown drive which he capped with a 7-yard touchdown reception.
Elzy, who entered the season with 208 career receiving yards, now has 317 in 2010. In his first nine games of the season, Elzy had nine catches for 37 yards. In his last two, he has 16 catches for 280 yards.
Da'Norris Searcy's interception in the first half was Carolina's first in the last three games after recording six in the three games prior. It was also Searcy's fourth interception of the season.
The Tar Heels held NC State to 163 passing yards, the fifth time this season an opponent has failed to reach 200 yards passing.
Place kicker Casey Barth made his only extra point attempt on the day, giving him 65 consecutive made PATs. Barth also made field goals of 19, 49, 21 and 38 yards, giving him 46 made field goals for his career, the ACC active lead. The 49-yarder was the longest of his career.
Barth made four field goals in a game for the first time this season. He also made four field goals in back-to-back games in 2009 (Duke and Miami).
Christian Wilson earned the first start of his career, lining up at tight end. He also scored his first career touchdown, a 1-yard catch late in the fourth quarter.
