UNC In Action At Head Of The Hooch

The North Carolina rowing team enjoyed a successful day of racing in eights and fours on Saturday at the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. A 5,000-meter head race on the Tennessee River, the event continues on Sunday, when the Tar Heels will race in pairs and singles.
"Overall, we feel pretty good," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We didn't race as well as we wanted to, so that part is a little frustrating. But even saying that, we met our goals and beat our goals. So we are definitely pretty pleased and feeling pretty good about beating some key programs and seeing how we fare against some of the faster teams in the country."
Carolina's first varsity eight was 15th in 16:56.5 and the second varsity eight was 30th in 17:6.4 in a field of 35.
Racing in the first eight were Emma Shaw (coxswain), Kelsey Grich, Alex McClelland, Jasmine Dennis, Blair Meiggs, Josephine Kooijman, Kristi Roblin, Lindsay Paterniti and Brittany Walsh.
In the second eight were Jennifer Nowicki (coxswain), Kathleen Reynolds, Liz Teel, Lindsay Newman, Erin Berg, Sarah Giles, Claire Wardius, Sefe Emokpae and Leah Kosow.
UNC's fours were 23rd (18:36.5), 30th (18:37.9), 33rd (19:13.6) and 36th (19:31.1) in a field of 42 boats.
In the first four were Nowicki (coxswain), McClelland, Grich, Meiggs and Kooijman. In the second four were Shaw (coxswain), Walsh, Dennis, Roblin and Paterniti. The third was Allie Davis (coxswain), Reynolds, Newman, Teel and Emokpae. The fourth was Carie Mastrianni (Coxswain), Berg, Giles, Wardius and Natasha Babchak.
The UNC novice eight finished fifth of a field of 46 with a time of 18.17.1.
The Tar Heel lineup for that boat Allie Davis (coxswain), Natasha Babchak, Blair Puleo, Morgan Koder, Olivia Wilson, Kathryn Bention, Danielle Balderas, Sarah Jones and Maria Santoyo.
Sunday's action is the final day of racing this fall before UNC turns to winter training. The spring schedule opens on March 19.
