Chase Rice is going to play for Carolina fans in Nashville for the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl.
No, the former Tar Heel linebacker won't be putting on the helmet and pads again. Now based in Nashville pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter, Rice is scheduled to do a half-hour set at the Carolina pregame party. He recently released a debut album, Friday Nights & Sunday Mornings.
Since graduating in 2009, Rice has also done a stint with a NASCAR pit crew. Most recently, he has been a contestant this fall on CBS' "Survivor: Nicaragua" reality TV show.
As a Carolina player, Rice received the John Lotz Award, given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of the late John Lotz, who served as UNC's Assistant Athletic Director of Campus and Community Relations and also was an assistant basketball coach for the Tar Heels. The award goes to a student-athlete who succeeds under adverse circumstances, overcoming difficulties while maintaining a positive attitude. The former Fairview resident double majored in management and society and communications studies at UNC.
