UNC Women Finish First Night Of ACC Championships In Second Place

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The women's swimming and diving ACC Championships began Wednesday night at Koury Natatorium with the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays.
Freshman Carly Smith led off for the Tar Heels swimming backstroke with a time of 24.54, followed by Sophomore Layne Brodie swimming the breaststroke leg in 27.80. Sophomore Sarah Tanner swam butterfly in a time of 23.93 and Junior Rebecca Kane anchored the relay swimming freestyle finishing in 21.90. The Tar Heels came in second with a new school record of 1:38.17 breaking the old school record set last year of 1:38.99. The University of Virginia took first place in the event with a time of 1:37.33. Both UVA and UNC went under the Koury Natatorium pool record for the 200-medley relay of 1:39.20. The University of Maryland came in third at 1:40.57.
The 800-yard freestyle relay followed the 200-medley relay an hour later. The Tar Heel relay led off with Junior Katura Harvey who finished in a time of 1:47.37, followed by Senior Megan Steeves finishing in 1:47.50. Senior Eliza Butts was third for the Heels touching in a time of 1:48.13. Freshman Stephanie Eisenring anchored the Heels in a time of 1:47.64. The UNC women finished in fourth place in a time of 7:10.64 behind Virginia, Virginia Tech and Florida State, respectively, all of which went under the Koury Natatorium pool record of 7:14.38.
The Tar Heel women finished the night in second place with a score of 64 behind UVA with a score of 80. The meet will continue Thursday morning with prelims starting at 11 a.m. The events for the second day include the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle. Diving will take place at 1 p.m. with the men on the 3-meter and the women on the 1-meter.
