Laura Moriarty won three individual events at the ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships and softball pitcher Danielle Spaulding hurled a pair of no-hitters in the Carolina Classic to share Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for February 15-21.
Moriarty, a sophomore from Methuen, Mass., won three individual events at the 2010 ACC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, earning UNC's only three individual titles of the meet and helping lead UNC to a second-place finish. Moriarty won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:07.66, the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.93 and she tied for the title in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:09.94. Moriarty broke ACC, school and ACC Championships records in the 400 IM but most importantly shattered the Koury Natatorium record set 21 years ago by four-time Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans. Moriarty's time in the 200-yard breaststroke also shattered ACC, school and ACC Championships records.
Spaulding, senior from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., tossed no-hitters against Delaware and St. Joseph's during the three-day Carolina Classic. Spaulding's performance led Carolina to four wins and a victory in the championship game. In Spaulding's three appearances in the circle over the weekend she amassed 38 strike outs, yielded no runs and only allowed one hit over sixteen innings pitched. At the plate, the two-time ACC Player of the Year added two home runs and seven RBIs for the No. 23 Tar Heels.
