UNC Head Coach: Roy Williams
Opening Statement:
"Well when it rains, it really rains hard. When you look at the stats, Chris [Singleton] is 10 of 50 in conference play from the three-point line, and he made three [three-pointers tonight]. And [Deividas] Dulkys is shooting 18-58, 31 percent from the three-point, but he made them. And we helped [Singleton and Dulkys] because they were so open. But they made them.
"To me, the key in that first half was the fact that we turned it over so many times. Just careless turnovers: throwing the ball from one guy to another, and just throwing [the ball] out of bounds when nobody was there. And [Florida State's] defense ran around in the post and got two steals there. They ended up scoring 12 points off of our turnovers in the first half. And then they made 9 of 15 from the three-point line.
"I still thought we had a chance. But we made a dumb play at the end of the half to give [FSU] a three, to make it a 15 point lead. We had [gotten it down] to 12 and 12 sounds just so much better than 15. But the fact of the matter is we made a dumb play and gave them a three.
"But I still thought we could come back. We had an open three at the start of the second half and missed it, then they missed. Then we had two free throws and if we had made the three it could have been [a 10-point lead], but we didn't make it. Then we didn't play at all for five or six minutes. And then the lead got [stretched] to a huge margin.
"The kids kept trying hard. But the inability to get shots [hurt us]. We didn't rebound very well. We had talked about how we needed to do a good job rebounding the basketball and we didn't do that. It was a multitude of errors."
Florida State Head Coach Leonard Hamilton
Opening Statement:
"I thought in the first half our guys came out and executed very well on the offensive end. Obviously when you come out and shoot almost 50% from the three point line and you shoot 50% overall, that gives you a chance, especially when you're on the road. I didn't think defensively we executed very well, and North Carolina shot 52%. In the second half, I think we did a little better job contesting shots. We turned the ball over 11 times, and they did a very good job of trapping us and putting us in situations in which we had to make decisions. I thought our guys were sloppy there toward the end, but overall I think we played with a lot of intensity, a lot of focus, and I think a lot of that is as a result of the respect we have for North Carolina. We know that they are a very young, talented team and that they are very capable and that at some point they are going to start maturing and hitting on all cylinders. We are similar teams in some respects in that we're young and growing. We're probably the two youngest teams in the league. I think we're growing and maturing and we have a couple guys who have stepped us and given us some good play from time to time. Overall I was pleased with the victory. It was obviously a very important game for us, and we're looking forward to going back and taking a day off and getting ready for a game on Sunday."
On NCAA Tournament:
"I'm not even going to get into an NCAA conversation right now. You don't even know what the criteria are. They go behind closed doors in a room and they come out and give you some teams. The thing we can control is making sure that we continue to win basketball games, and hopefully if we do that we'll have some opportunities at the end of the season. I think you put yourself in jeopardy if you try to get into the NCAA tournament with eight wins [in ACC play]. I don't think we have enough at this particular point. We just have to make sure we keep winning, and we'll see at the end."
On Chris Singleton:
"Chris has been taking great shots and I've said all along that he's developing more and more to become a complete player. I think he's defending, he's rebounding, he's blocking shots, [and] he's giving us good leadership out on the floor. Tonight he was very relaxed and his shots were falling from the perimeter and I think it gave him some confidence. I thought he played a great floor game in addition to giving us some good offensive productivity."
