Carolina Golfers Fifth At LSU Tiger/Wave Classic

The North Carolina women's golf team carded a 14-over-par 285 in the first round of the LSU Tiger/Wave Classic and stands in fifth place. Sophomore Catherine O'Donnell led the Tar Heels by firing an even par 72.
O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., is tied for fourth place in the individual race. Her even par round featured three birdies and three bogies. Freshman Courtney Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., is two strokes back at 74 and is tied for 16th place. Sarah Thead, a junior from Poway, Calif., shot a four-over 76 and is tied for 34th. Senior Kate Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, carded an 80 to tie for 81st while junior Jordan Allyne, from Bellevue, Wash., shot an 84 and is tied for 112th. Junior Margaret Pentrack competed as an individual and shot an 86 to tie for 119th place.
Alabama leads the 23-team field as the Crimson Tide fired a five-over-par 293 on Friday. LSU is one stroke back in second place at 294. Virginia is third at 296 while Mississippi is fourth at 300, Carolina is fifth at 302 and Purdue and Vanderbilt are tied for sixth place with 303 totals.
Brooke Pancake of Alabama and Tessa Teachman of LSU are tied for the individual lead at two-under-par 70. Jennifer Kirby of Alabama is alone in third place at one-under 71. Seven players are deadlocked in a tie for fourth place at even par 72 - Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell, Purdue's Laura Gonzalez, Notre Dame's Becca Huffer, TCU's Louise Kristersson, Alabama's Camila Lennarth, LSU's Megan McChrystal and Vanderbilt's Lauren Stratton.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday and is being played at English Turn Golf and Country Club which features a par 72, 6,132-yard layout.
