Carolina Golfers Finish Eighth At LSU Tiger/Wave Classic

NEW ORLEANS, LA. -
The North Carolina women's golf team fired a seven-over-par 295 in the final round of the LSU Tiger/Wave Classic to finish in eighth place with a 909 total. Junior Sarah Thead was the top Tar Heel as she tied for 15th place with an eight-over 224 total.
Thead, from Poway, Calif., carded a 76 on Sunday en route to her 224 total. Tar Heel freshman Courtney Gunter led Carolina in the final round as she fired a two-under-par 70. Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., finished at 12-over 228 to tie for 31st place along with sophomore Catherine O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. O'Donnell posted a six-over 78 in the final round for her 228 total. Senior Kate Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, fired a one-over 73 on Sunday to finish with a 231 total and a tie for 49th place. Jordan Allyne, a junior from Bellevue, Wash., shot a 76, her best round of the tournament, for a 245 total and finished tied for 104th. Junior Margaret Pentrack, from Pittsburgh, Pa., participated as an individual and carded a 246 total to tie for 107th. Michelle Ahn, a freshman from Chapel Hill, withdrew from the all three rounds due to a sprained ankle. She was also an individual entry.
Auburn topped the 23-team field with an 889 total after firing an even par 288 in the final round. TCU was the runner up, seven strokes behind the Tigers at 896. Alabama finished third at 897, LSU fourth at 901, Virginia fifth at 902, Tennessee sixth at 905, Georgia seventh at 906, Carolina eighth at 909 and Wake Forest ninth at 912.
Megan McChrystal, a junior from LSU, captured the individual title with a three-under-par 213 total after firing a three-under 69 in the final round. Calle Nielson of Virginia was the runner-up, finishing one stroke back with a two-under 214 total after also shooting 69 on Sunday. Auburn's Cydney Clanton finished in third place with a 215 total while teammate Candace Schepperle finished fourth at 219. LSU's Tessa Teachman tallied a fifth-place finish with a 220 total.
The 54-hole event was played at English Turn Golf and Country Club which features a par 72, 6,132-yard layout. The Tar Heels' return to action March 26-28 at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga.
