Carolina Golfers Finish 14th At Kinderlou Forest

The North Carolina women's golf team kicked off its spring season with a 14th-place finish at The Challenge at Kinderlou Forest. The Tar Heels, led by Catherine O'Donnell, carded a 945 total. O'Donnell tied for 19th place with a seven-over-par 226 total.
O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., fired a 76 in the final round after a pair of 75s on Monday. Junior Jordan Allyne, from Bellevue, Wash., led the Tar Heel effort in the final round firing a one-over-par 74. Allyne finished with a 244 total in a tie for 77th. Senior Kate Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, carded a 79 on Tuesday for a 239 total to tie for 64th place. Courtney Gunter, a freshman from Matthews, N.C., tallied a 243 total after shooting 80 and tied for 75th. Sarah Thead, a junior from Poway, Calif., carded an 83 for a 247 total to finish 80th.
Tulane topped the 18-team field with a 13-over-par 889 total. The Green Wave fired an eight-over 300 in the final round, the low round of the day. Ohio State was the runner-up at 20-over 896, seven strokes behind Tulane. Tennessee finished third at 901 while Georgia and Vanderbilt tied for fourth at 903, Virginia finished sixth at 908 and Florida and Mississippi tied for seventh place with 913 totals.
Janine Fellows of Tulane captured the individual title with a two-under-par 217 total. Fellows carded a three-under 70 in the final round, the low round of the day. Vanderbilt's Marina Alex and Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora finished two strokes back at even par 219. Chattanooga's Emma de Groot and Tulane's Samantha Troyanovich tied for fourth place at one-over 220 while Tennessee's Diana Cantu finished alone in sixth place at 221 and a trio of players tied for seventh place at 222 - LSU's Megan McChrystal, Ohio State's Amy Meier and Arkansas' Kelli Shean.
The 54-hole event was played at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club which features a par 73, 6,265-yard layout. The first two rounds were scheduled for Monday, but play was halted midway through the second round at 6:30 due to darkness. Players began at 8:30 Tuesday morning and were able to get in the remainder of the second round and the final round.
The Tar Heels' next action will be March 12-14 at the Tiger-Wave Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La.
