ATHENS, Ga. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team settled into third place after a day of battling between second and fourth in the second round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Led by Courtney Gunter, the Tar Heels went 16-over for the day, totaling a 38-over 614 after two rounds.
Gunter, a freshman from Matthews, N.C., is currently tied for seventh after her four-over 76 outing on Saturday. Gunter is currently seven-over par for the tournament and nine strokes behind the leader.
Senior Kate Thomas had an incredible day on the links, carding a one-over-par 73 for the second round. The Murwillumbah, Australia, native is currently tied for 16th. Catherine O'Donnell dropped back to a tie for 12th when she added her second round six-over 78 score to her cumulative card. The sophomore from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., now holds a 10-over 154 after round two.
Junior Sarah Thead got the day started to a rough start carded three double-bogeys in six holes, but she recovered with a handful of birdies to finish the day at five over. The Poway, Calif., native is tied for 50th heading into the third round. In a disappointing round, Jordan Allyne finished the day 17-over and dropped back a tie at 103rd from her previous tie at 32nd. Junior Margaret Pentrack, who is competing as an individual, carded a 10-over-par 82 for the second round to move up to a tie at 108th.
"Overall I thought we played well today. We started out a bit rough, but kept playing the course and in the end we were able to hang tough," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "Hopefully tomorrow we can go out and play the golf course and finish strong."
"The conditions were tough again today - very windy and the course had dried out so the greens were fast," Mann continued. "Kate had a very good round and played solid throughout the day. Sarah finished really well - she was several over on the first few holes, but finished strong. Courtney played solid all day and Catherine struggled a bit in the beginning, but was able to finish strong."
Duke continues to its clutch of the team leader board totaling 24-over after two rounds. Auburn pulled ahead of Carolina by five strokes to sit alone in second place at 33-over. Duke's Lindy Duncan hung onto first place shooting even-par for the second round, followed by Cheyenne Woods of Wake Forest in second after going one-over par for the day.
The tournament concludes in a shotgun start on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. The 54-hole event is being played at University of Georgia Golf Course which features a par 72, 6,335-yard layout.
