CHAPEL HILL --- No. 1 North Carolina turned in its second dominant performance in as many days, blanking Maryland, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels lost just 12 games in six singles matches, highlighted by No. 47 Sanaz Marand's 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 and Gina Suarez-Malaguti's 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4.
Carolina (16-3, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) shuffled its doubles lineup for the second straight match, but the Tar Heels responded with a trio of victories.
Sophie Grabinski and Jelena Durisic were first off after an 8-2 win over Jordan Hansbrough and Lexi Brand at No. 2. Marand and Suarez-Malaguti then clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Lisa Miller and Maggie MacKeever at No. 1. Jocelyn Ffriend and Haley Hemm completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Julia Huschke and Burce Krukan at No. 3.
Marand quickly made it 2-0 with her win over MacKeever at the top of the singles lineup, with Shinann Featherston pushing Maryland (3-7, 0-5 ACC) to the brink with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Huschke on court three.
Durisic sealed Carolina's third dual win of the week at No. 2, rolling past Miller, 6-1, 6-2.
Suarez-Malaguti, Ffriend and De Bruycker finished the job in the bottom half of the lineup to give the Tar Heels their third ACC sweep in as many tries.
UNC will put its spotless league mark on the line again Wednesday when the Tar Heels host in-state foe Wake Forest at 2:30 p.m. Admission is free.
