Novice Eight Takes Second At Occoquan Sprints

OCCOQUAN, Va. - The novice eight led the way for the North Carolina rowing team at Sunday's Occoquan Sprints, finishing second in the final after winning its heat. In racing on the Occoquan Reservoir, the varsity eight was sixth overall and the second varsity eight placed third in the petite final.
UNC's fours both raced in heats, with the varsity finishing third in its race and the novice four taking fourth.
The Tar Heel novice eight's second-place finish came in a time of 07:18.78. UNC won its morning heat in 07:38.00 to advance to the final. Racing in the novice eight were Carie Mastrianni (coxswain), Anastasia Bury (stroke), Sarah Giles, Alyssa Stewart, Alison Russell, Ashley Cox, Emily Chapin, Alex Box and Isabel Blue (bow).
The varsity eight finished sixth in its final in a time of 6:38.45. The Tar Heels were second in their morning heat (06:46.82) to reach the final. The Tar Heel line up was Emma Shaw (coxswain), Kelsey Grich (stroke), Alex McClelland, Megan McMullin, JoAnne Rogers, Sarah Day, Blair Meiggs, Andi Drabot and Brittany Walsh (bow).
The second varsity eight finished third in the petite final with a time of 7:16.74. The Tar Heels were fifth in their heat in 7:22.75. Racing in the Carolina boat were Jennifer Nowicki (coxswain), Sefe Emokpae (stroke), Erin Berg, Alex Biggers, Liz Teel, Shelby Austin, Claire Wardius, Jessica Crumpler and Leah Kosow (bow).
In the fours racing, the heats acted as finals, with each boat having only one opportunity to race. The UNC varsity four placed third in its race in 07:52.42. The novice four was fourth in its heat in a time of 08:26.92.
The Tar Heel varsity four lineup was Sarah Cook (coxswain), Kristi Roblin (stroke), Lindsay Paterniti, Toni Moran and Jasmine Dennis (bow).
The novice four lineup was Kelly Wice (coxswain), Brye Balkum (stroke), Liz Moser, Audrey Ann Lavallee and Elizabeth Lynch (bow).
