Carolina Golfers Second At Tri Match At Ironwood

The North Carolina women's golf team finished in second place at the Tri-Match at Ironwood. Tar Heel senior Kate Thomas and sophomore Catherine O'Donnell tied for third place.
The 36-hole, one-day event was a tournament between three teams, North Carolina, Virginia and host East Carolina. The format was like a normal tournament, play five and count low four scores. Carolina carded a 22-over 598 total which came when the Tar Heels responded to their morning round of 308 with a two-over-par 290 in the afternoon. Virginia won the three-team event with a six-over 582 total. The Cavaliers fired a two-over 290 in the morning followed by a four-over 292 in the afternoon. East Carolina finished six strokes behind the Tar Heels at 28-over 604 with rounds of 304-300.
Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, and O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., both fired two-over-par 146 totals. Both players fired a two-under 70 in the afternoon after both shot a four-over 76 in the morning for their third-place finishes. Courtney Gunter, a freshman from Matthews, N.C., tied for sixth place after carding a five-over 149 total with rounds of 76-73. Another freshman, Michelle Ahn, competed as an individual and tied for ninth place. The Chapel Hill native shot a 73 in the afternoon after carding a 77 in the first round. Jordan Allyne, a junior from Bellevue, Wash., is alone in 16th place with rounds of 80-77 for a 157 total while Sarah Thead, a junior from Poway, Calif., is tied for 19th at 159 shooting 81-78. Junior Margaret Pentrack also competed as an individual. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native finished 21st at 163 with rounds of 84-79.
Calle Nielson of Virginia fired a pair of even par 72s for a 144 total to capture the individual title. Teammate Brittany Altomare is one stroke back in second place with a one-over 145 total after firing rounds of 71-74. Carolina's Thomas and O'Donnell are tied for third while East Carolina's Abby Bools is alone in fifth place at 148 and a trio of players is tied for sixth at 149 - Carolina's Gunter and Virginia's Nicole Truitt and Carly Truitt.
The 36-hole event was played at Ironwood Golf & Country Club which features a par 72, 6,325-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action April 16-18 at the ACC Championships to be played at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.
