Carolina Finish In Fifth Place At ACC Championships

The North Carolina women's golf team fired a 313 in the final round for a 906 total to finish in fifth place at the ACC Championships. Senior Kate Thomas led the Tar Heels by firing a four-over-par 75, tying for sixth place in the individual race.
Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, finished with a five-over 218 total over three days. Freshman Courtney Gunter and junior Jordan Allyne both carded an eight-over 79 on Sunday. Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., tied for 16th place with a 227 total while Allyne tied for 31st at 239. Catherine O'Donnell, a sophomore from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., finish with a 230 total to tie for 25th after posting an 80 in the final round. Junior Sarah Thead rounds out the Carolina scorecard with a 243 total. The Poway, Calif. native tied for 36th place after struggling with an 85 on Sunday.
Wake Forest successfully defended the team title with a 17-over-par 869 total, its fifth ACC title in school history. The Demon Deacons fired their highest round of the tournament, a 14-over 298, but it was still good enough for a four-stroke victory over Virginia. The Cavaliers carded a three-over 287 to finish with a 21-over 873 total, one stroke ahead of Duke which finished in third place at 22-over 874. Florida State carded a 302 in the final round to pass the Tar Heels and finish in fourth place with a 901 total. Carolina finished fifth at 906 followed by Maryland in sixth place at 915 and NC State seventh at 927.
Michelle Shin, a freshman from Wake Forest, fired an even par 71 in the final round to capture the individual championship with a two-under 211 total. Brittany Altomare and Callie Nielson, both from Virginia, finished one stroke back in a tie for second place at one-under 212. Two Duke players, Lindy Duncan and Stacey Kim tied for fourth place at three-over 216 while Carolina's Thomas and Wake Forest's Cheyenne Woods tied for sixth place at five-over 218.
The 54-hole event was played at Sedgefield Country Club which features a par 71, 6,355-yard layout.
One Carlyle Cup point was awarded to Duke as they finished higher than the Tar Heels in this event. The Carlyle Cup is an all-sport competition between the two schools. Carolina currently leads Duke 14.5-9.5.
