Carolina Golfers Eighth At Bryan National Collegiate

The North Carolina women's golf team is in eighth place after carding a 13-over-par 301 in the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate. Courtney Gunter led the Tar Heels after firing a two-over 74 on Friday.
Gunter, a freshman from Matthews, N.C., is tied for 22nd place going into the second round. Sophomore Catherine O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., finished one stroke behind Gunter at three-over 75 to tie for 30th place. Two Tar Heels carded a four-over 76 - senior Kate Thomas and junior Jordan Allyne. Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, and Allyne, from Bellevue, Wash., are deadlocked in a tie for 40th place while Sarah Thead, a junior from Poway, Calif., carded a 79 to tie for 67th. Michelle Ahn, a freshman from Chapel Hill, is competing as an individual and shot an 82 to tie for 87th place.
Tennessee leads the field of 18 teams after firing a one-under-par 287. Wake Forest is two strokes back at one-over 289 while Florida State and Vanderbilt are tied for third place at three-over 291. Ohio State is fifth at 292, Duke is sixth at 293, South Carolina is seventh at 294 and Carolina is in eighth place at 301.
Michelle Shin of Wake Forest fired a four-under-par 68 to grab the individual lead. Tennessee's Nathalie Mansson and Florida State's Macarena Silva are one stroke back at three-under 69 in a tie for second place. Katie Burnett of South Carolina and Cheyenne Woods of Wake Forest are deadlocked in fourth place at two-under 70 while four players are tied for sixth place at one-under 71.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at the Bryan Park Players Course, a par 72, 6,323-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
