Maryland Knocks Tar Heels Out Of ACC Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Fifth-ranked Maryland defeated third ranked North Carolina 13-5 in the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament semifinals Friday night at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. Maryland improved to 9-2 with the win while the Tar Heels fell to 11-2 heading into their season finale at home against Ohio State in 15 days.
The Terps will played second-ranked Virginia Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the ACC Tournament championship game. Virginia beat No. 4 Duke in the first game Friday 16-12.
Grant Catalino led an explosive Maryland offense with six goals while John Haus scored three times for the Terps and Brian Farrell had two. Ryan Young had a goal and three assists for Maryland.
The Terps led start to finish, building a quick three-goal lead and never allowing the Tar Heels to get closer than two goals in the first half and five goals in the second half.
Thomas Wood returned to the lineup for UNC for the first time since the two teams met in Chapel Hill on March 27 which resulted in a 9-7 win by the Tar Heels. Wood led the Tar Heels offensively with two goals and an assist. Gavin Petracca, Jimmy Dunster and Marcus Holman had the other goals for the Tar Heels who suffered their largest margin of defeat since a 17-6 loss to Duke in the 2008 ACC Tournament semifinals on April 25, 2008. The Terps defense held UNC junior attackman Billy Bitter scoreless for the first time since he did not tally a point against Navy on May 10, 2008 in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
Maryland dominated the game statistically, outshooting the Tar Heels 44-33 and winning the ground ball battle 42-33. The Terps won 14 face-offs to only eight for the Tar Heels. Brian Phipps made 13 saves for the Terps while allowing only five goals while Chris Madalon had 12 saves for the Tar Heels while allowing 13 goals.
Maryland opened the scoring at 8:06 of the first quarter on an unassited goal by Grant Catalino as he beat Chris Madalon just inside the right pipe. Ryan Young scored Maryland's second goal with 2:36 left in the quarter on a deflection off a UNC defender to put the Terps up 2-0. The first quarter ended that way with Maryland outshooting the Tar Heels 12-5.
Maryland went up 3-0 with 10:45 left in the second quarter as Brian Farrell won a ground ball in the midfield and scored on the fast break on the doorstep. The Tar Heels finally broke through with a goal with 8:16 as Jimmy Dunster fired from 10 yards out in the left side alley, scoring off an assist from behind by Thomas Wood. The Terps answered that goal with 4:24 left in the half as Catalino scored his second goal of the game on the right side off an assist by Dan Burns. Carolina got a goal back 46 seconds later as Thomas Wood scored from the left side off an assist by Chris Layne. Maryland scored a goal in transition at 2:25 as John Haus scored off an assist by Dean Hart. Maryland ended the half with not only a 5-2 lead but a distinct edge statistically. The Terps outshot the Tar Heels 20-13 in the half, had a 20-14 edge in ground balls and won seven face-offs to only two for the Tar Heels. The two goals were the fewest the Tar Heels have scored in a first half this season.
Maryland increased the lead to 6-2 on an unassisted goal by John Haus, his second of the game, with 10:30 left in the third quarter. Maryland extended its lead to five on an extra-man goal by Grant Catalino, his third tally of the game, off an assist by Ryan Young at 6:29 of the third quarter. Catalino then scored his fourth goal of the game with 2:58 to play in the third quarter off an assist by Dan Burns. The Terps ended the third quarter with an 8-2 lead.
John Haus scored his third goal of the game with 14:20 left in the fourth quarter, his third goal of the day for the Terps. On the ensuing face-off, Brian Farrell scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Maryland face-off man Bryn Holmes. The Tar Heels finally ended the Maryland run with 12:34 left as Marcus Holman scored an extra-man goal off an assist by Gavin Petracca. The Heels then scored again just 19 seconds later as Thomas Wood scored off a rebound of a shot after Milton Lyles' initial shot was saved by Brian Phipps. The Heels cut the lead to 10-5 at 10:49 when Gavin Petracca scored off an assist by Zander Walters, his first career point. Maryland stemmed the tide on Grant Catalino's fifth goal of the day off an assist by Ryan Young. The goal came with 9:49 to play in the game. Catalino scored his sixth goal of the game into an empty net with 7:49 to play. Maryland added on another goal with 2:58 as Fran Gormley scored off an assist by Ryan Young after a failed clear by the Tar Heels.
Carolina will play its season regular season finale on Saturday, May 8 at Fetzer Field. It will be Senior Day at Fetzer Field.
