GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina senior Danielle Spaulding earned the honor of Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week the league announced Tuesday. Spaulding, who has been named ACC Pitcher of the Week (Mar. 9) and Player of the Week (Feb. 23) previously this season, pitched a complete game no hitter against Virginia on April 3rd. The no hitter ties Spaulding with former Carolina pitcher Crystal Cox for most no hitters in a career and is Spaulding's fifth no hitter this season.
Spaulding, a Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. native, did not allow a hit and struck out 19 batters for the week. In three starts Spaulding pitched 12.2 innings with a 1.11 ERA and earned one win for the Tar Heels. For the season Spaulding ranks among the top-five in the ACC in five different statistical pitching categories.
The 19 strike outs this week brings Spaulding's total this season to 173 punch-outs in only 105.1 innings pitched (11.9 per seven innings). The two-time ACC Player of the Year leads all current NCAA players in strike outs per seven innings at an 11.8 clip.
Carolina returns the field on Wednesday with a home doubleheader with (20-14) Winthrop starting at 4 p.m.
