Spaulding Wins ACC Pitcher of the Year; Blake, Knauer And Spaulding Earn All-ACC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- University of North Carolina senior pitcher Danielle Spaulding was named Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year by the league on Friday. Spaulding was also named to the first-team All-ACC team with teammate Christine Knauer, and sophomore Ally Blake earned second team honors. Spaulding's selection is the third of her career, while Knauer and Blake earned All-ACC for the first time.
Spaulding, a senior from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., compiled a 1.04 ERA, 18-4 win-loss record and 275 strikeouts in 168 innings pitched this season. Spaulding earned the Pitcher of the Year Award for the first time in her career after receiving the ACC Player of the Year Award the past two seasons and becomes the third player in ACC history to win three individual awards in a career. The senior pitched four no-hitters this season and earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors three times during the 2010 season. With this season's inclusion, Spaulding has now been selected All-ACC first team three consecutive years.
Knauer, who led the ACC in stolen bases with 39 this season, earned first team All-ACC honors at shortstop. The senior from Long Island, N.Y. started every game for the Tar Heels in 2010 and compiled a .402 on-base percentage from the leadoff spot. The senior finished second on the team with a .338 batting average and led the Tar Heels in runs with 41 this season.
Blake, a sophomore from Concord, N.C., earned second-team All-ACC honors at the catcher position. Blake posted a .299 batting average this season with seven home runs and a .488 slugging percentage. The sophomore catcher caught 46% (12 of 26) of base runners attempting to steal in 2010. Blake led Carolina in walks this season with 25 and posted a .442 on-base percentage.
