CHAPEL HILL, N.C - No. 24 North Carolina scored 11 runs over the last two innings to topple Elon 17-7 Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Mike Cavasinni notched four of the Tar Heels 18 hits as Carolina improved to 28-17 on the year. Elon's Ken Ferrer suffers the loss allowing six runs as the Phoenix drops to 30-18 this season.
Colin Bates (4-2) earned the win, tossing 3.1 innings of relief and allowing just one run. Starter Patrick Johnson allowed three runs on three hits in 3.2 frames of work. Zach Bernard, Nate Striz and Bryant Gaines combined to allow three runs in two innings of relief.
Cavasinni's four hits are just one shy of his career-best five set in 2006. Dillon Hazlett and Ryan Graepel each added two hits and four RBI to lead Carolina. Graepel belted his second home run in his last three games in the win.
10 different Tar Heels registered at least one hit as Ben Bunting, Levi Michael and Jesse Wierzbicki all added two apiece. Michael and Hazlett each extended their hit streaks to career-bests 12 and 11 games.
Freshman Josh Leemhuis recorded his first collegiate hit and RBI with a double Tuesday. The 17 runs are the most since the Tar Heels defeated Richmond 17-6 March 31.
Carolina manufactured six runs on six hits in the first two innings. A bases loaded triple off the bat of Hazlett and two-RBI single from Wierzbicki highlighted the frames for Carolina.
Elon scored three of their runs early all courtesy of the home run. A solo blast from Matt Hinson and two-run shot from Justin Hilt inched the Phoenix closer to the Tar Heel lead at 6-4 after six frames.
Phoenix reliever J.D. Reichenbach was solid in 4.2 innings of work as he fanned six Tar Heels. Reichenbach held the Tar Heels scoreless until the seventh inning, but Carolina plated five runs in the seventh.
Cavasinni parachuted a two-RBI single to help Carolina push in front 11-4 after seven frames. The Tar Heels added six more runs in the eighth after Graepel's three-run home run to lead 17-5.
The Phoenix threatened with a pair of runs in the ninth, but Gaines closed out the game to seal the ten-run victory for Carolina.
Carolina will return to action Friday hosting Wake Forest for a three-game set at Boshamer Stadium.
