Carolina Golfers 15th At NCAA East Regional

The North Carolina women's golf team is in 15th place after carding a six-over-par 294 in the first round of the NCAA East Regional being played at Ironwood Country Club. Freshman Courtney Gunter led the Tar Heels firing a one-under 71 on Thursday.
Gunter's 71 came on an even par back nine after three birgies and two bogeys on the front. Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., is tied for 20th place. Junior Sarah Thead carded a one-over 73 and is tied for 43rd. The Poway, Calif. native finished with birdies on holes #16 and #17. Senior Kate Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, posted a two-over 74 and is tied for 54th place. All-ACC performer Courtney O'Donnell, a sophomore from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Jordan Allyne, a junior from Bellevue, Wash., both carded a four-over 76 and are tied for 81st place.
Auburn fired an eight-under-par 280 to grab the lead over the 24-team field. Pepperdine is just one stroke back with a seven-under 281 total. South Carolina and Tennessee are tied for third place at five-under 283. Florida is in fifth place at four-under 284 while three teams are tied for sixth at 285 - Tulane, East Tennessee State and Texas Tech. Other ACC teams in the East Regional are Duke, which is tied for 10th at 290, and Wake Forest, which is in 16th place, two strokes behind the Tar Heels at 296. Host East Carolina is tied for 13th with a 293 total.
Nina Muehl of East Tennessee State fired an eight-under 64 to grab the individual lead, three strokes ahead of a trio of players tied for second place at five-under 67 - South Carolina's Katie Burnett and Pepperdine's Danielle Kang and Jessica Wallace. Carlie Yadloczky of Auburn is alone in fifth place at four-under 68 while four players are tied for sixth place at three-under 69 - Tennessee's Diana Cantu, TCU's Valentine Derrey and Florida's Isabelle Lendl and Mia Picclo.
The 54-hole event continues through Saturday at Ironwood Country Club which features a par 72, 6,321-yard layout. Live scoring is available on TarHeelBlue.com and Golfstat.com
