A pair of Tar Heels that were key figures in four consecutive College World Series appearances are continuing to make noise a year after leaving Chapel Hill. The second pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, Dustin Ackley, was called up to Triple-A Tacoma just after the All-Star break. Joining Ackley on the transaction list was Adam Warren who earned a promotion to Double-A Trenton later in the week.
Ackley opened the season with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx in the Southern League at the Double-A level and struggled in the opening month before turning it on in May and June as he hit over .300.
The Winston-Salem, N.C., native finished his 82 games at Double-A with a .263 batting average scoring 42 runs, driving in 28 and tallying 27 extra-base hits (21 2B, 4 3B, 2 HR). Ackley made a quick first impression with a home run in his very first at bat with the Tacoma Rainiers. He also holds a .263 average in his five games with the Mariners' Triple-A affiliate Tacoma driving in seven runs thanks in large part to three doubles and a home run.
After posting a 4-2 record in 12 starts with Staten Island in the short-season New York Penn League last summer Adam Warren opened 2010 with the Tampa Yankees of the High-A Florida State League. Warren was impressive in 16 starts at Tampa earning a record of 8-5 with a 2.20 ERA and a WHIP of 1.099.
Warren picked up where he left off after getting the call up to Double-A Trenton by earning the win against the Reading Phillies this past Friday as he went 5.0 innings allowing just an earned run. Warren will get his second start for the first place Trenton Thunder on Wednesday against the New Britain Rock Cats.
