GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No.4-ranked Tar Heels opened the scoring early Saturday night en route to a 3-0 road exhibition win over UNC Greensboro Saturday night. Kirk Urso tallied twice in the win as Carolina improved to 2-0 in the exhibition season.
Kirk Urso registered the first goal in the third minute when Alex Dixon forced a turnover in the UNC Greensboro half and made a run down the left side with Billy Schuler in the middle. Kirk Urso filled in behind Schuler and fired a shot from 25 yards out that found the bottom right corner of the goal for the opening tally.
Urso nearly scored again at the 9:22 mark when Dixon fed a cross to the back post that Urso reached with his head but cleared the crossbar for a goal kick.
Less than a minute later Dixon made another run and found freshman Bruno Castro in the box. Castro received the ball, jetted to his right avoiding a pair of defenders and fired a shot across the goal and into the back of the net.
The physical match saw a combined 32 fouls and six cards, including a pair to senior Stephen McCarthy the last coming in the 43rd minute of the opening half which forced the Tar Heels to play a man down for the entire second half.
Carolina drew a pair of penalties in the second half despite being a man down as Billy Schuler was tripped up in the box in the 68th minute. UNC Greensboro's goalie made up for the mistake and stopped Schuler's penalty attempt. Kirk Urso made up for Schuler's miss in the 83rd minute when he finished off a penalty for the third goal of the game. Urso took the penalty after Josh Rice earned the foul in the box.
The Tar Heels will not have much time to rest, as they will wrap up their preseason schedule on Monday when they host the Carolina Railhawks at Fetzer Field at 7 p.m.
