SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. - Top-ranked North Carolina got a goal from junior forward Courtney Jones in the 49th minute and withstood a late onslaught of shots by Cal Poly to defeat the Mustangs 1-0 Friday night at Alex G. Carolina improves to 5-0-1 on the season and will play at San Diego State Sunday at 4:30 p.m. EDT. Cal Poly fell to 3-3 on the season.
Carolina got the only goal it needed in the match in the 49th minute. Amber Brooks chased down a loose ball in the deep right corner and sent a cross to the far post. Cal Poly cleared the ball out but Jones gathered it on around the 20-yard line and sent a shot top shelf over the outstretched fingers of Cal Poly goalkeeper Brooke Gauvin. Jones' goal was her third of the season and it marked the second straight game in which she has scored the game-winning goal.
UNC outshot the Mustangs 19-6 in the match but the Mustangs had some outstanding chances to tie the game in the second half. The Tar Heels played two goalkeepers in the game with Hannah Daly going the first 45 minutes and freshman Anna Sieloff going the second 45 minutes. She made three key saves and earned the victory.
UNC's 19 shots, eight of which were on goal, came with balance led by California nativ Courtney Jones with four. Kealia Ohai, a freshman, had three shots while five other Tar Heels had two shots each.
ON the Cal Poly side, Whitney Sisler took half of the Mustangs' six shots. All six shots came in the second half, three of the efforts were on goal.
UNC had eight corner kicks to five for CP SLO.
Although the Tar Heels outshot the Mustangs 11-0 in the first half, neither team had a great chance to score unti the final moments of the 45 minute period. Brooke Gauvin, now 2-2 in goal for CP SLO, made four first-half saves. UNC had a very dangerous opportunity when Meghan Klingenberg took a corner kick with less than 10 seconds left. A shot by Elizabeth Burchenal was blocked by the defender off the line and the ball squirted free across the goal box but no Tar Heel was there to put it away.
After Jones scored for Carolina at 48:38, Kealia Ohai high the right post with a shot inside the penalty area. Had she scored the Heels would have been up 2-0 and the game essentially over.
Instead, Cal Poly found new life, had six second half shots, five in the last 15 minutes. Included in that bunch were three breakaway chances. Sieloff saved a shot by Biannca Burright at 66:49. After Carrie Andrew sent a shot hit in the 76th minute, Whitney Sisler sent an effort just wide 44 seconds later.
Kacey Held had a breakaway at 82:40 but she was chased down by Megan Brigman and that helped Sieloff make a save from point blank range. Sieloff made another save on a shot in the box by Sisler at 85:15 before Cal Poly's last chance of night was probably its best. Sisler's shot at 88:06 was a sitter in the box, one-on-one with Sieloff. She sent it high and it was Cal Poly's last good chance to earn the tie
