North Carolina Postgame Notes UNC vs. Georgia Tech Sept. 18, 2010
Tailback Johnny White rushed for a career-high 113 yards on 17 carries, eclipsing his previous best effort of 92 yards on 18 carries against Maryland in 2007.
White was UNC's first 100-yard rusher since Ryan Houston had 164 yards vs. Duke in 2009.
Quarterback T.J. Yates finished 18 of 24 for 209 yards and one touchdown (and one rushing score). Yates has now completed 559 of 925 attempts for 6,580 yards and 43 touchdowns in his career. He is second in UNC history in attempts, completions, yards and TDs.
Yates' 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was the fifth rushing TD of his career and his first since the 2009 Florida State game.
Wide receiver Erik Highsmith's 52-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter was the longest reception of his career.
Georgia Tech's 20-play, 87-yard drive in the second quarter was the longest in terms of number of plays by a Carolina opponent since a 20-play, 83-yard drive by Georgia Tech in 2006.
Georgia Tech rushed for 372 total yards, marking the third consecutive meeting in which the Yellow Jackets topped 300 yards on the ground and the most yards against UNC under Butch Davis. The Yellow Jackets rushed for 326 yards in 2008 and 317 in 2009.
Today was the first game in which two opposing players rushed for 100 yards since the Virginia Tech game in 2005. Anthony Allen led the Yellow Jackets with 115 yards and Joshua Nesbitt had 104.
Nesbitt became the first quarterback to rush for 100 yards against Carolina since Clemson's DeChane Cameron rushed for 117 on Nov. 9, 1991.
Carolina's 15-play, 73-yard opening drive was the longest in terms of number of plays by the Tar Heels since a 16-play, 78-yard field goal drive against Virginia Tech on Oct. 29, 2009.
LB Ebele Okakpu's fumble recovery in the third quarter was the first of his career.
Carolina led 17-14 after the first five possessions (three for the Tar Heels and two for Georgia Tech). Carolina had run 33 plays for 229 yards and had the ball for 15:16. Georgia Tech had run eight plays for 143 yards in 3:44.
Tech then ran 57 of the next 69 plays (prior to Carolina's final 13-play drive). The Yellow Jackets had the ball for 29:34 out of the next 34:02.
Carolina had the ball for 11:11 in the first quarter and 13:49 for the final three quarters.
Punter C.J. Feagles (37 yards) had his first career punt and QB Bryn Renner (0 for 1) made his first collegiate appearance coming in to relieve an injured Yates on the second-to-last offensive play of the game for the Tar Heels.
The series record is now 25-18-3 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. The Tar Heels still lead the series, 10-9-2, in Chapel Hill.
Neither team punted in the first half and there were just three punts in the entire game (two by UNC).
Tight end Zach Pianalto had seven catches for 62 yards today and leads the Tar Heels with 15 receptions for 136 yards in the first two games this season.
